Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the colon, rectum and anus. It is caused by the
body’s own immune system. Common symptoms include:

  • frequent diarrhea
  • rectal bleeding
  • abdominal pain
  • increased urgency and incontinence
  • weight loss
  • joint pain
  • fatigue
  • vision changes
  • raised, tender red nodules under the skin

Left untreated, ulcerative colitis can lead to hemorrhoids, anal fissures, perirectal abscesses, and a
20-30% increased risk of colorectal cancer. Therefore, proper disease management and regular
check-ups are very important.

Some of the common medications that your doctor may prescribe for ulcerative colitis include
mesalamine suppositories, budesonide rectal foam, or hydrocortisone enemas. However, did you
know ther may be other options available for you? Ask your doctor about compounding! At Optimal
Wellness Pharmacy we compound specialty products, such as:

  • a combines mesalamine and budesonide enema for those that do not want to take multiple
    medications
  • a turmeric enema for patients that seek more natural solutions
  • antihistamine, leukotriene, and/or mast cell stabilizers in various dosage form
    combinations
  • allergen free medication options
  • anti-spasmotic oral drops for patients with abdominal pain that cannot tolerate pills

While the above treatments help manage symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life, we suggest
that patients with ulcerative colitis make lifestyle changes and avoid triggering food or activities.
While in remission, it is recommended to stay hydrated and eat plenty of fiber, fruits, vegetables, and
lean proteins. It is also recommended to get enough calcium and prebiotics from sources like yogurt,
kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh (unless if found to have a fungal overgrowth). Patients may also
find it helpful to eat smaller, more frequent meals and keep a food journal to identify any potential
food triggers. A good probiotic with diverse beneficial bifidobacterium bacterial species are also
essential for optimal colon health.

During a flare-up, howevere, patients should stick to a low fiber diet and only have lactose-fre dairy
or non-dairy alternatives. It is also recommended to avoid sugary foods, fatty foods, spicy foods, and
alcohol during flare-ups to minimize symptoms. We also offer nutritional counseling services and
complimentary 15-minute integrative health and wellness consultations for a more holistic
assessment of what may be at the root of your disease, including hormonal imbalances,
environmental exposures, and metabolic syndromes. Please call us and ask about our services to see
how we might be able to help you!
